Madrid - Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal watched his local side Real Mallorca win promotion to La Liga on Sunday, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to triumph 3-2 against Deportivo La Coruna in a play-off.
Nadal, fresh from his 12th French Open title, applauded as Ante Budimir (20 minutes), Salva Sevilla, with a 62nd minute free-kick, and Abdon Prats (83) took his home club back to the top flight.
Mallorca, who are owned by a group of investors, including Robert Sarver, owner of the Phoenix Suns NBA team and former basketball star Steve Nash, will return to facing the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, seven years after being relegated.
Mallorca finished the regular season in fifth place in the second division while Deportivo were sixth, forcing the clubs into a series of play-offs.
The other two promoted sides are Osasuna and Granada with Huesca, Rayo Vallecano and Girona relegated from the top flight.
