After a dreadful start to their season, the Los Angeles Galaxy are pondering a change at head coach, according to multiple reports in Ireland on Friday.
Former Galaxy standout and Ireland international Robbie Keane reportedly is in line to replace Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Galaxy did not refute the reports outright, instead characterizing them as a "rumor."
The Athletic reported later Friday that the current Galaxy coaching staff was still on the job getting set for a Sunday match against the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps. Assistant coach Gustavo Barros Schelotto, Guillermo's twin brother, told The Athletic, "We have a contract for this year and next season. Our expectation is to fulfill that contract."
The Galaxy are in the midst of a six-game losing streak, the most recent coming in a 4-0 thrashing at home by the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday. They are also winless in their last seven games.
With a 4-9-3 record (15 points), the Galaxy are last in the Western Conference and six points below the playoff line.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto is in his second season with the team after guiding L.A. to a 16-15-3 record in 2019 and a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs. They were eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals 5-3 by crosstown rival Los Angeles FC.
Keane was a scoring machine for the club during one of the more dominating runs in its history while playing alongside Landon Donovan and David Beckham. The former Tottenham, Liverpool and Celtic star scored 83 regular-season goals for Los Angeles in 125 games from 2011-16. He also was the former captain of Ireland's national team.
Keane scored the deciding goal in the 2014 MLS Cup final as the Galaxy won three of their five all-time MLS Cup titles during his six seasons.
The 40-year-old was a player/manager with ATK FC in India in 2018, has been an assistant coach with the Ireland national team since 2018 and was an assistant coach at Middlesbrough of the English Football League, leaving that position in June after head coach Jonathan Woodgate was fired.
