The Ottawa Senators placed forward Derek Stepan on injured reserve, the team announced Thursday.
Stepan, 30, sustained an upper-body injury during the first period of Ottawa's 5-4 shootout victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
"He's going to see the doctor today and we'll get the official word," head coach D.J. Smith said. "It doesn't look good at this point but we'll wait until the doctor makes a diagnosis."
Stepan has recorded six points (one goal, five assists) in 20 games during his first season with the Senators. Ottawa acquired Stepan from the Arizona Coyotes in December for a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
Drafted 51st overall in 2008 by the Rangers, Stepan spent his first seven seasons in New York before moving to Arizona in a trade prior to the 2017-18 season. He has 485 points (168 goals, 317 assists) in 759 career games with the Rangers, Coyotes and Senators.
Also on Thursday, the Senators recalled defenseman Erik Brannstrom and forward Matthew Peca from the team's taxi squad. The club also recalled forward Logan Brown from Belleville of the American Hockey League and re-assigned him to the taxi squad.
