The NHL fined Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson $5,000 for his role in a brawl Monday night against the New York Rangers.
The league fined Wilson the maximum allowable amount under the collective bargaining agreement for roughing Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich in the second period of the Capitals' 6-3 win at Madison Square Garden.
After Buchnevich fell to the ice on his stomach while battling for a puck in front of the Washington goal, Wilson punched him in the back of the head.
When Rangers star Artemi Panarin attempted to pull Wilson away from Buchnevich and forward Ryan Strome, Wilson slammed Panarin to the ice.
Panarin, who has 58 points (17 goals, 41 assists) in 42 games, has a lower-body injury and is expected to miss the last three games of the regular season for New York (26-21-6, 58 points), according to Sportsnet. That includes Wednesday's rematch with the East-leading Capitals (33-14-5, 71 points).
Wilson, 27, received a double-minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct, but returned to the game and scored his 13th goal into an empty net with 1:26 left.
Wilson served a seven-game suspension earlier this season for boarding Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo. That followed four previous suspensions over a 105-game span from 2017 to 2018.
