Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto hit home runs in a five-run sixth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies scored a 6-2 victory over the Padres in San Diego on Thursday.
Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove entered the series opener against the Phillies with an 8-0 record and a 1.59 ERA -- and he didn't allow a hit through 4 1/3 innings Thursday. Then seven of the next nine Phillies got hits.
The Phillies scored once in the fifth to tie the game then got a two-run homer from Schwarber and a three-run shot from Realmuto, ending Musgrove's run of 12 straight quality starts. In fact, the Phillies' six runs equaled the number of runs Musgrove (8-1) had allowed in his last six starts.
The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second on Eric Hosmer's home run off Phillies starter Ranger Suarez, who improved to 6-4 by holding the Padres to two runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out three over 7 1/3 innings -- his longest outing of the season.
Realmuto got the action going against Musgrove with a one-out single in the fifth -- the Phillies' first hit. Realmuto advanced to second on a wild pitch and tied the game on Odubel Herrera's single to left off the glove of shortstop Ha-Seong Kim.
Bryson Stott doubled to open the Phillies' sixth and immediately came around when Schwarber struck his 20th homer of the season over the fence in straight-away center. After Rhys Hoskins popped out to first, Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos had back-to-back singles. Realmuto then hit his fourth homer of the season -- into the right-field stands.
Musgrove's ERA climbed from 1.59 to 2.12.
Trent Grisham opened the Padres' eighth with a single off Suarez, moved to third on Austin Nola's double and scored on Jorge Alfaro's groundout to first.
