Zoom classes, online assignments, and social distancing became the new normal earlier this year. However, distance learning has not been easy for students, parents, or teachers.
Luckily, a few Bay Area high schoolers identified this problem and created YAPA Kids.
This organization, which is completely run by high schoolers, consists of nearly 30 different educational programs, including programming, science, math, foreign languages and fine arts. Members of the organization are always working on new programs and finding ways to enrich the students' experiences.
During these online classes, elementary and middle school students interact with their teachers and fellow students through various activities, games, and lessons. Each YAPA teacher is committed to this cause, as they spend hours each week planning curriculum, answering questions, and adapting based on the weekly feedback.
YAPA Kids hopes to inspire academic curiosity amongst children and allow high schoolers to share their knowledge and give back to their communities during a difficult time. Though this organization began in the Bay Area, it has quickly grown. They currently have over 2000 students and 300 teachers from all over the United States and even Canada.
As the new school year begins, these devoted high schoolers will continue to serve their communities by making their programs more accessible. As they take this next step, they ask for their fellow high schoolers to join them in working towards their goal. They do not expect anyone to be an expert in a certain subject, but instead they look for high schoolers who are willing to learn along the way and share what they know with those younger than them.
Each volunteer chooses up to 5 different programs to participate in and can also help with administrative tasks, social media, or program development. With more teachers dedicated to this cause, YAPA Kids will be able to help even more children learn and have enjoyable experiences during this uncertain and unfortunate time. Additionally, any student in elementary or middle school is welcome to sign up for these classes. Please visit yapakids.org for more information about this organization!
