Reliever Alex Carrillo is set to be promoted from Syracuse by the Mets after not allowing a hit or run in a brief stint with the team's Triple-A affiliate.
MLB Network reported Carrillo would be activated by the Mets on Tuesday.
Carrillo tops 100 mph with his fastball and mixes in a sinker and changeup, resulting in 40 strikeouts in 25 total innings across multiple levels of the minor leagues in 2025.
At Triple-A, the right-hander had 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings with no runs, hits or walks yielded.
The 28-year-old sidearm hurler was a reclamation project by the Mets out of winter ball and has only appeared in 22 games in the minors in his career, posting a record of 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings. Opponents have a .162 batting average against Carrillo.
It's not only his delivery that's unorthodox.
His journey to the big leagues featured stints in Mexico, Venezuela and the Frontier League after getting his start at junior college and advancing to NAIA Faulkner University in Alabama. He pitched in rookie ball for the Texas Rangers in 2019 but was released after three games.
Prior to signing with the Mets last winter, he pitched for Tigres de Aragua in the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.
The Mets entered Tuesday 13th in MLB with a combined 3.83 bullpen ERA and ranked 17th in WHIP at 1.31.
Carrillo, who had 30 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings for Double-A Binghamton before joining Syracuse, has a WHIP of 0.92 in 2025.
