Michael Porter Jr.'s first season with the Brooklyn Nets might be over after the team announced Thursday that its leading scorer was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain.
Porter, 27, is averaging a career-high 24.2 points per game along with 7.1 rebounds while shooting 36.3% from 3-point range in 52 games (all starts). Porter, who will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks, shares the team rebounding lead with Nic Claxton.
For a Nets team with one of the league's worst records, Porter will probably sit out the rest of the season rather than rush back for just a game or two.
Porter had missed the last three games due to a right ankle sprain before the hamstring injury occurred, leading to an MRI on Wednesday. Brooklyn is 3-17 without Porter.
Last offseason, the Nets acquired Porter and a 2032 first-round pick from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Cam Johnson.
A first-round pick of the Nuggets in the 2018 NBA Draft, Porter averages 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists over seven seasons with the Nuggets (2019-25) and Nets. He's three games shy of 400 for his career, making 343 starts.
