Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez was placed on the injured list on Wednesday with a torn meniscus and could miss up to two months recovering from the right knee injury.
Alvarez will have surgery to repair the injury and his spot on the roster was filled when the Mets recalled Hayden Senger from Triple-A Syracuse.
Alvarez, 24, was hurt when his leg twisted fouling off a pitch in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 10-2 win over the Tigers. Alvarez made contact with the Burch Smith pitch but appeared off-balance as he pushed the ball foul. Manager Carlos Mendoza and trainers removed Alvarez from the game during the at-bat.
Alvarez is batting .241 this season as the everyday catcher for New York. His best projection for a return to the lineup in late June or early July.
The Mets have been hit hard by injuries to starting position players. Outfielders Mike Tauchman and Jared Young hit the injured list with the same injury -- torn meniscus -- and are currently out.
Luis Torrens will take over the majority of the work behind the plate for the Mets with Senger backing him up.
Torrens, 30, signed a two-year contract extension with the Mets on May 2.
He had 10 hits in 48 at-bats this season (.208 average) entering Wednesday's game. He's in his third season with the Mets and has played for the Padres, Mariners and Cubs since his MLB debut in 2017.
