The struggling Chicago Cubs called up top infield prospect Pedro Ramirez from Triple-A Iowa on Friday.
Infielder/outfielder Matt Shaw landed on the 10-day injured list with mid-back tightness in a corresponding move.
The Cubs have dropped five straight games and nine of 11 heading into the opener of a three-game home series against the Houston Astros on Friday.
Ramirez, 22, has yet to make his major league debut. He was not in the starting lineup for Friday afternoon's game at Wrigley Field.
Ranked as Chicago's No. 2 prospect and No. 85 overall by MLB Pipeline, Ramirez is batting .312 with a .942 OPS, nine homers, 40 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 43 games at Iowa this season.
Ramirez won a minor league Gold Glove in 2025 while splitting time between second and third base at Double-A Knoxville.
Shaw, 24, is batting .242 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 42 games this season. The 2023 first-round draft pick has appeared in games at every fielding position except catcher and shortstop this season.
