Victor Robles' infield single brought home the deciding run with one out in the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game interleague series.
Cole Young and Dominic Canzone hit solo homers for the American League West-leading Mariners, who won their sixth consecutive game.
Luis Castillo (2-5) pitched five innings of two-hit relief to earn the victory.
With automatic runner Randy Arozarena at second base, Diamondbacks reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (1-2) intentionally walked Luke Raley. Young dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Robles hit a grounder up the middle that shortstop Geraldo Perdomo smothered with a diving attempt, but he was unable to throw out the speedy Robles.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the second as Young led off by hitting a fastball that stayed just inside the right field foul pole. Seattle threatened to add to its lead as Jhonny Pereda and Colt Emerson singled and J.P. Crawford walked to load the bases with one out. Julio Rodriguez hit a liner to center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt and he easily threw out Pereda, a slow-footed catcher, at the plate for an inning-ending double play.
Mariners starter Bryce Miller allowed one hit -- a one-out single by Ildemaro Vargas in the second -- with one walk and six strikeouts over five scoreless frames but was pulled after 71 pitches as he was working as part of a piggyback with Castillo.
That backfired immediately as the Diamondbacks tied it in the sixth. Ketel Marte drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double to center by Corbin Carroll. Marte was thrown out at the plate by shortstop Crawford on a grounder by Perdomo, but Carroll took third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch.
Canzone put the Mariners back out front as he led off the bottom of the inning with a blast that grazed the inside of the right field foul pole.
Arizona tied it 2-2 in the eighth after pinch hitter Gabriel Moreno led off with a bloop single down the right field line. Tim Tawa dropped a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, with Josh Naylor's errant throw to second sailing into center field, putting runners at second and third. Marte followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Moreno. After Carroll grounded out, Perdomo hit a liner that appeared headed for right field, but second baseman Young made a leaping catch to keep the score even.
