Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested Friday night on a family domestic violence charge in Texas, but the district attorney in Williamson County, Texas said he was not pursuing charges Saturday evening.
The Austin American-Statesman received confirmation from the district attorney, Shawn Dick, that though officials would continue to evaluate the case, the case was being 'declined.'
'After further investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and further discussion with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his attorneys, this case is being declined at this time pending completion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff's Office,' Dick said to the American-Statesman.
Per jail records from Williamson County, Texas, Worthy was booked with assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing or circulation. The charge is a third-degree felony in Texas and is punishable with a sentence of two to 10 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
Under Texas law, impeding breathing includes 'intentionally, knowingly or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person's throat or neck or by blocking the person's nose or mouth.'
'We are aware and gathering information,' the Chiefs said in a statement Saturday morning, per NFL Network.
Attorneys Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett issued a statement on Saturday proclaiming Worthy is the victim of a 'baseless allegation.'
'The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy's residence upon discovery of her infidelity,' the statement reads. 'She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.
'We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy's innocence.'
The situation involving Worthy makes the second straight offseason that a Chiefs wide receiver has found trouble off the field. Rashee Rice was arrested in April for his involvement in a multi-car crash while racing a Lamborghini in Dallas.
Worthy, 21, bolted out of the blocks and set an NFL Scouting Combine record with a time of 4.21 in the 40-yard dash. He was selected by the Chiefs with the 28th overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.
He had 59 catches for 638 yards and six touchdowns and rushed for three more scores.
Worthy had three touchdown receptions in the playoffs, including two in the second half of the Chiefs' 40-22 setback to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
