The slumping Bo Bichette had a pair of RBIs and the visiting New York Mets beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in the opener of a three-game series Monday.
Bichette, who was 1-for-14 and heard boos at Citi Field during the Mets' season-opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, had an RBI groundout in the first inning before he put New York ahead for good with a run-scoring single in the fifth off Kyle Leahy (0-1).
Alec Burleson laced an RBI single in the first and Nolan Gorman homered in the sixth for the Cardinals, who dropped their second straight game following an 0-2 start.
The Mets added insurance in the sixth, when Jared Young had an RBI double and scored when Juan Soto worked a bases-loaded walk.
Jorge Polanco and rookie Carson Benge each had two hits for the Mets, who are 3-1 for the first time since 2023. Benge added a stolen base.
Every New York starter had at least one hit except second baseman Marcus Semien.
Clay Holmes (1-0), who is beginning his second season as a starter, earned the win after allowing the two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five batters over 5 2/3 innings.
Tobias Myers struck out three in 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief and Brooks Raley tossed a one-hit eighth before Devin Williams earned his first save with the Mets by whiffing one in a 1-2-3 ninth.
Burleson was the lone player with two hits for the Cardinals. Gorman's second homer of the season traveled an estimated 419 feet to right-center.
Leahy, who made his second major league start, allowed all four Mets runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out one in five-plus innings. The five frames were easily a career-high for Leahy, who threw 3 2/3 innings of relief for the Cardinals against the Colorado Rockies last July 22.
